Counseling FAQs
What is the difference between Counseling and Advising?
Advisors are faculty or staff members who assist with academic information and help you with developing an educational plan and course of study.
Counselors are service faculty members trained in counseling to help students with personal, educational, and occupational skills. They can help you develop better study skills, manage stress, deal with crises, and set goals. Counselors also work with other departments as consultants and trainers.
Who can receive counseling?
Counseling is available for students who are enrolled at Phoenix College, as well as students who are planning to attend. Counselors are also available for faculty and staff consultation.
Is my information kept confidential?
Discussions with counselors are kept private and confidential, and all counseling records are kept separate from your academic records. They will only be made available outside of counseling if you wish to sign a release of information.
Records may be made available to law enforcement if an individual poses an imminent threat to themselves or someone else, or in cases of suspected child or elder abuse.
Counselors follow the ACA Code of Ethics and abide by the standards and practices established by the Maricopa Community Colleges and Phoenix College.
