The 15th annual Eric Fischl Lecture Series took place last Wednesday, the 17th, at the Phoenix Art Museum. This year, PC Alum Eric Fischl brought guest artist, Carroll Dunham, to speak at the series. As part of the event, Phoenix College student artwork selected as “best in show” from pieces submitted to the Student Art Exhibition are displayed in the Phoenix Art Museum’s Great Hall. Eric Fischl and guest artist Carroll Dunham selected four students to receive the prestigious Vanguard Award which includes a cash prize and will be presented at the lecture. Students can also be awarded a 1-3rd ribbon in each of the categories: 3-dimensional, 2-dimensional, media arts, and photography.
This opportunity -to have two professional, acclaimed artists critique and award their work- is a pivotal point in many students’ art career. Makenzie Heinemann, previous Eric Fischl Scholar and Vanguard Award winner, notes that, “It was the first time that somebody outside my group of friends -like somebody with some status- liked what I was doing so it kind of gave me the confidence to believe in what I was doing.” Heinemann went on to study art at ASU after graduating from Phoenix College, and had her final BFA art show just a couple weeks before this year’s Eric Fischl Lecture Series. “I didn’t think I was going to study art, but then talking to Eric and just being in that environment, it felt like if I didn’t keep doing this I would really regret it and miss out on it. I was going to go study psychology just because it was a safe career. -But I’m so glad I didn’t,” said Heinemann, who was one of several past winners in attendance at this year’s Lecture Series.
Eric Fischl’s presence helps Phoenix College students and impacts the rest of their art careers. The lecture series provides a venue for individuals to gather with college and university students, educators and art enthusiasts in an open discourse about art and its place in our culture and society. The experience is one that can’t be forgotten. This year’s winners are as follows:

Guest artist Carroll Dunham lives and works in New York and Connecticut. His work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions at international institutions including Museum Ludwig, Cologne; Millesgården, Stockholm; Drammens Museum, Drammen, Norway; and the New Museum of Contemporary Art, in New York. An article in Art in American Magazine reports that Dunham has “built a graphic world of ‘nameable things’ – in a purposeful evasion of subtlety, an attempt to purge a subject of its nuance and reduce it to an essential visual archetype” [Ross Simonini].
